Overview

Growth faltering is a concern among Saudi children under 5, largely due to low intake of essential micronutrients. A study of 15,516 children shows that calcium intake is below 60% of the recommended dietary allowance, while 20% and 78% of children are deficient in iron and vitamin D, respectively. These deficiencies have persisted for over 20-30 years. Early intervention can help ensure normal growth and catch-up development, but late action may limit this opportunity.
