Overview
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection remains a worldwide public health problem with an estimated prevalence of 468 million cases and prevalence of liver cancer due to HBV of 599 thousand and a prevalence of cirrhosis and other chronic liver diseases due to HBV of 12 million.
With a Saudi population estimate of about 20 million, this proportion would give an estimated 260 thousand HBV cases in the country. Of those patients, only 14% have been diagnosed in the past 10 years and only 2% were on treatment.
