Deep Insight into Conventional Cytogenetics Methodology
Overview
The nucleus of eukaryotic cell is harboring the hereditary material (DNA). During the cell division, The DNA packaging is mediated by protein forming a thread-like structure termed as chromosomes. These chromosomes can be visualized and studied in order to detect abnormalities.
Cytogenetics is a branch of genetics that studies the relationship between chromosomal aberrations and genetic diseases. This specialized laboratory testing provides diagnostic and prognostic tools to characterize specific human genetic disorders.
These series of lectures intend to provide practical guidance in how to obtain a well spreaded metaphase ready for analysis starting from sample receiving to karyotype interpretation. This series designed as follows:
Part I: Specimen preparation and culturing procedure
Part II: Harvest Procedure and Slide preparation
Part III: Metaphase selection, capturing and automation
This Activity for
- Clinical Laboratory Sciences
What I will learn?
By the end of this series you will be able to:
•Define conventional cytogenetic and its application in constitutional and oncology settings.
•Describe proper specimen handling and culturing selection for bone marrow and peripheral blood specimens.
•Explain harvesting procedure and slide preparation for chromosomal analysis.
•Understand metaphase chromosome selection and capturing methodology for proper diagnosis.
